Pilates involves movements designed to improve strength, flexibility, posture and coordination. It combines awareness of the body and correct breathing with exercises to achieve slimmer, longer, stronger muscles without building bulk. The pilates method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s and is a favourite exercise for dancers and athletes as well as those looking to improve the performance of their body.
Pilates is very effective in rehabilitation as it gently reeducates the body to move correctly, helping repair injuries.
The principles of pilates are key to its success and to our approach at Bodyright:
- Concentration - pilates is a brain exercise, focus helps you control your body
- Breathing - every movement in pilates involves conscious breathing
- Centering - get your core stability right and everything else will follow
- Control - pilates movements are slow and controlled
- Precision - every movement and position is important to an exercise being effective
- Flowing movement - smooth movements, with the breath
- Isolation - using the right muscle for the job
- Routine - consistency, repetition and frequent practice
Pilates is safely used by pregnant women, helping them confidently adjust to their changing shape. It also encourages proper breathing patterns and awareness of body alignment. Pilates will also help recover body shape and tone after pregnancy.
A recent development in New Zealand is 'Pink Pilates' - a specialised programme developed by physiotherapists, surgeons and nurses to aid the recovery of women with breast cancer through the various stages of their treatment. Bodyright is the only Pink Pilates provider for the Pink Pilates Trust in the Wellington region.
Pilates is based on individual instruction to ensure correct muscle activation and movement patterns. Although the equipment is different to that found in a gym, there are a few standard pieces of very versatile equipment. We also perform many exercises without equipment, which helps the body learn to stabilise itself. After experiencing a Pilates session you will be aware of muscles you never knew you had.
"You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions ,and have a completely new body in 30 sessions."
Joseph H. Pilates
